Costume Design Tear Sheets

In an interview with The Haute Mess, costume designer Kimberly Adams shared "tear sheets" she created for character and groups in Stranger Things. The "tear sheets" served as a visual reference and inspiration for the character wardrobes, and were compiled using images from books, magazines, movies, real life family photos and yearbooks.

The tear sheets are interesting, as they reveal some of the influences and inspirations behind the characters. Many of these are common knowledge by now, while others I have never heard of.

I have identified several of the images in the sheets and listed them below each sheet. If you recognize more, leave a comment!

For Joyce's sheet, Meryl Streep's character Karen Silkwood in Silkwood (1983) and singer/actress Cher's style in the 1980's served as major inspirations.

  1. If I'm not mistaken, the little girl in two of Eleven's references is Newt from Aliens.

In Will Byers' second reference sheet, there are two pictures of Henry Thomas as Elliot from E.T. the Extra Terrestrial.

Two images in Hopper's reference - one is also in the police department reference - is Chief Martin Brody (played by Roy Scheider) from Jaws!
