A Closer Look at the Articles About Dr. Brenner, Terry Ives and MKUltra
Newspapers reveal more about the mysterious past of Hawkins Lab and Eleven's mother
In "Chapter Three: Holly, Jolly," Chief Hopper and Officer Powell go to the Public Library to dig up information about Hawkins National Laboratory and its director Dr. Martin Brenner. They search old newspaper articles that lead Hopper to suspect the lab and Brenner have something to do with Will's disappearance.A closer look at the articles reveals more information about Terry Ives' lawsuit against Hawkins Lab and Dr. Brenner, as well as some minor details about the exposure of MKUltra. Most of the articles are framed so we only see a portion of them, but we get a pretty clear idea of their substance. Also, much of the writing is unintelligible, but I have managed to decipher some of it by careful frame-to-frame inspection:

Alleged Experiments, Abuse
By T. Bridges
Terry Ives’ legal case against embattled research scientist Dr. Martin Brenner suffered another setback today when the district attorney’s office formally refused to press criminal charges against Brenner, his fellow researchers, assistants, or the project’s sponsors, citing lack of evidence. Local law enforcement executed a search [cutoff]
This one provides a close-up photo of the test subjects and Brenner (above with the negative inverted). Hopper later prints it and we get to see the full version, providing us with the longest article of the lot.
MKUltra ExposedNotice how the beginning of the second paragraph is repeated in the third paragraph. I guess they ran out of steam, went for an easy copy-paste solution and didn't think anyone would care to look closer.

The most interesting information revealed by the articles is about Terry Ives' lawsuit against Hawkins National Laboratory and Dr. Brenner, but they contain only trivial details about Hawkins Lab's involvement in MKUltra.
We learn that a lawsuit against the lab was filed on Ives' behalf, when she claimed that they kidnapped her newborn daughter for scientific research. The district attorney declined to press charges, citing lack of evidence after an investigation was held. Dr. Brenner's attorney called the allegations baseless and tragic, citing Brenner's excellent reputation and twenty recent peer-reviewed scientific papers. Terry later filed another lawsuit against Brenner and his staff, alleging physical abuse, sleep deprivation, malnourishment and kidnapping.
At a later time, the covert CIA operation MKUltra was revealed. (In real life, this happened in 1975.) Over 1700 documents found during a protocol yearly inspection were released, containing significant details about the drug tests and death of subjects at the hands of experimenters. Six subjects came forward, offering witness testimony to the horrors they were forced to endure at several labs (probably including Hawkins). Hawkins Lab was suspected of conducting mind control experiments on unsuspecting human subjects, but they blocked inquiries despite their legal obligation.
